  • Five-line skeleton: focus theme, one try, one reading, monthly check-in, CPD/CEU log

How the official path is ordered

You are buying a sequence, not a logo. For eft couples therapy training that ICEEFT will recognize, the Externship is the first formal step. The Externship page calls it a four-day, 24+ hour training and the first step in formal emotionally focused couple therapy training. It also says there are no prerequisites. ICEEFT recommends Fundamentals first. That recommendation is not the same thing as a certification requirement.

Fundamentals is a one-day introduction across individual, couple, and family work. The Fundamentals page says it is usually followed by an Externship, an individual essentials course, or a family essentials course. Use it if the model is new to you. Do not treat the one day as the Externship.

Core Skills comes after the Externship. The Core Skills page says you must have completed the four-day Externship before you enroll. You also present your own work on audio or video, and you declare your professional designation.

Live online is not a recording

Two buys use the word online. They do not count the same way.

A live-online Externship from ICEEFT Courses is official eft couples therapy training. The November 5 to 13, 2026 listing is four days, six hours of training each day, with certified trainers, in North American time zones. That is the Externship, delivered on a screen. The full price on that event page is US$1,145. The student price is US$795. Early-bird sales had ended. An in-person host can charge a different fee. The certification page says training fees vary by format and location. Read the host page you will actually pay, not a second city’s number.

A recording is a different purchase. The learn-online page says these courses are not sold on the ICEEFT site, and that only official ICEEFT events count toward certification. It lists the Psychwire course, EFT: Attachment Science in Practice, at 16 hours with 16 CE credits. Finish it if you want the model before you commit four days. Do not write those 16 hours on a certification application as an Externship.

Core Skills is not on the ICEEFT Courses calendar. That site points you to the ICEEFT event list for Core Skills, including live online outside North America. Online standard Core Skills exists. One November 2026 Zoom listing, a four-day 24-hour course, showed full registration at $1,390 and marked it sold out. Use that figure as a host price, not as an open seat. Ask the next host for the live number and the currency.

Standard or extended, then finish it

The Core Skills page is plain about the fork. Standard Core Skills is 24 hours: 12 hours on stage one and 12 hours on stage two. It can be online or in person. Extended Core Skills is four two-day events, usually across about a year, with a minimum of 48 hours. The group is limited to 12, or 16 if a second trainer or a certified supervisor leads.

Both versions count toward certification. You complete one. If you enroll in the extended version, you do not stop at 24 hours and collect a standard certificate. The pacing is not the same, and the page says a partial extended course does not produce a completion certificate.

ChicagoEFT’s extended training with Gretchen Harro runs October 8, 2026 through March 5, 2027, in person. The host page lists $1,850 if you pay in full, and a pay-as-you-go schedule that totals more. It states 48 continuing education credits, and that the host is licensed to offer those credits for LMFT, LCPC/LCSW, and psychologists in Illinois. Credits for other boards are named as a separate purchase on that page. If you are not licensed in Illinois, do not assume the credit transfers. Ask your board before you count the hours.

What certification still asks for

The certification page describes a certified EFT therapist as someone whose work in the model is recognized by ICEEFT. That recognition is not a license to practice. Your license is the one your board already holds.

The public steps, in order, are membership, the review fee, the readings and trainings for the modality, supervision, a video chosen with your supervisor, and the application package. Annual membership is CAD $85. The review and administration fee is CAD $600, with lower fees for applicants outside North America based on gross national income. Training fees are separate and vary by event.

Supervision is with a modality-specific certified supervisor. The public page requires the hours. It does not publish the number. That count sits on the members site. Do not guess it from a workshop brochure. Open the checklist before you book a supervisor.

Who may attend is also on the Externship page. The list includes psychiatrists, psychologists, family physicians, social workers, psychiatric nurses, counselors, pastors and clergy, and students training in those professions. School counselors and occupational therapists may attend if they are licensed and belong to a professional body with standards for psychotherapy or counseling. Life coaches may not attend unless they also meet one of those categories. Core Skills adds that you belong to a mental health professional organization and that you are working, or training to work, with couples.

Required reading for the Externship and for Core Skills is Susan M. Johnson, The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection, 3rd edition, 2020, Routledge. Fundamentals recommends Johnson, Attachment Theory in Practice, 2019, Guilford Press.

A choice you can copy

Fill the sheet before you open a registration page. Write the answer from the host page, not from memory.

The moves you use once you are in the room live on the emotionally focused couples therapy techniques page. Map the cycle there. The rows above are a buying choice, not a session script.

If the fight you keep seeing is criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling, the four horsemen card is a different model. Name which model you are buying training in. Do not use an EFT certificate to cover a pattern you have not named.
