Counseling supervisor credential paths

Texas LPC supervisor status

Credential: LPC-S, the supervisor status added to a Texas LPC license

Who grants it: Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council, under the eligibility rules it points to in Texas Administrative Code Chapter 681.72

Requirements: An unrestricted LPC license in good standing for at least five years. The council may count time licensed in another jurisdiction if you document it. You submit the online application plus either a 40-clock-hour supervision course certificate or an official transcript showing a for-credit doctoral course in supervision of professional counseling or mental health services.

Hours: 40 clock hours of supervision training, or that doctoral course. The council’s supervisor page says the course has no expiration date once completed, and that proof still has to be submitted with the application. After you hold the status, the same page says you provide at least 4 hours of supervision each month. That monthly duty is not the training course.

Renewal: Keep an active LPC-S license in good standing. Confirm the current continuing-education hours on the council’s renewal page before you renew.

Texas grants its own status. A national credential does not replace it.

Approved Clinical Supervisor

Credential: Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS)

Who grants it: Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE), an NBCC affiliate. NBCC’s description of the ACS calls it a national supervision credential and states the 45-hour training figure. CCE sets the current eligibility and renewal rules.

Requirements: A master’s degree or higher in a mental health field from an institution accredited by an organization the Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognizes. An independent-practice license in a behavioral or mental health field, in good standing, or the National Certified Counselor credential from NBCC. A professional disclosure statement for supervisees that covers the 10 areas on CCE’s requirements page, including your supervision model, evaluation procedures, confidentiality limits, fees, emergency contact, and agreement to follow the ACS code of ethics plus your licensing board’s rules.

Hours: A three-semester-hour graduate course in clinical supervision from a CACREP-accredited program, or 45 clock hours of training specific to providing clinical supervision or becoming a clinical supervisor. The 45 hours must cover the 10 content areas on CCE’s training page. You also document at least 100 hours of clinical supervision you have already provided, individual or group, with no more than 12 members in a supervision group. Clinical experience is separate: at least five years post-master’s in mental health services, including at least 4,000 hours of direct service with clients. NBCC’s description also says there is no examination for the ACS.

Renewal: The credential is valid for five years if you follow CCE policies, including disclosure. CCE’s maintenance page sets an annual maintenance fee of $50, a 60-day window to disclose a disciplinary matter, and recredentialing at the end of the five years. Reinstatement of an expired ACS requires a reinstatement application, 20 hours of continuing education within the last five years, a $50 fee, and any past-due fees.

CPCS is not a national substitute for the ACS. It shows up where a board names it.

Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor

Credential: Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor (CPCS)

Who grants it: Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia (LPCAGA). Georgia’s Composite Board does not grant CPCS. Rule 135-5-.02 names it as one of two credentials an LPC supervisor must hold.

Requirements: For supervision entered into after September 30, 2018, an LPC supervisor must hold either the NBCC Approved Clinical Supervisor credential or the LPCAGA CPCS. The same rule sets post-licensure experience by degree: three years with a master’s, two years with a specialist degree, and one year with a doctorate. The board may approve experience it finds substantially similar. A licensed clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist can also meet the supervisor definition, with the same degree-based experience, but those licenses are not CPCS.

Hours: Georgia’s rule does not set a CPCS training-hour total. LPCAGA sets the training for the credential it grants. Confirm the current hour total and content areas with LPCAGA before you enroll or pay a workshop. A course flyer is not the rule.

Renewal: The rule does not create a separate supervisor license you renew with the board. Keep the Georgia LPC in good standing, and keep the ACS or CPCS current for supervision entered into after September 30, 2018. Confirm the current CPCS renewal hours with LPCAGA.

Texas, CCE, NBCC, and Georgia pages checked October 2026. Read the rule again before you rely on a number.

CCE’s ACS page publishes the states that recognize the ACS as a supervision credential of choice. Georgia is on that list. Texas is not. Recognition is not a requirement. Your board’s rule is the requirement.

What that person actually does

You are Maya this month. You are an LPC Associate in Austin. A colleague offers to supervise and shows you an ACS certificate. The certificate is real. It is not LPC-S. If you start hours before the Texas council’s supervisor page is satisfied, you may be buying a meeting your board will not count.

Would your board count this hour if the person across from you holds a national credential your board never named?

Georgia’s rule draws a line you can use as a question, not as every state’s definition. Supervision is direct clinical review for training: case presentations, audiotapes, videotapes, and observation of your clinical work. Direction is the administrative oversight an employer provides. They are not the same chair. In Georgia, individual supervision is one supervisor with at most two supervisees. Group supervision is one supervisor with at most six. Those caps are Georgia’s. Do not paste them onto a Texas agreement.

The meeting itself is a different job from the credential. How you file the hour, the agreement, and the evaluation lives on the clinical supervision documentation page. Whether the meeting is supervision, mentoring, or consultation lives on the supervision versus mentoring page. A counseling supervisor who only mentors you cannot sign the hour log.

What to ask before you sign

Ask the counseling supervisor for four facts before the first session you hope to count: the credential, who granted it, the hour rule your board uses, and the date the status renews. Then ask for a written disclosure. CCE requires an ACS applicant to cover model, evaluation, confidentiality limits, fees, emergency contact, and the ethics they will follow. You can ask for those same facts from a Texas LPC-S or a Georgia CPCS. The ACS list is a useful set of questions. It is not a second state’s statute.

Copy the blank version when you are the one choosing, or when a supervisee asks you to walk the same check.

If you searched counselor supervisor, you are in the same decision. Boards and directories use both phrases for the person who can sign hours. The phrase does not tell you which credential your board accepts.

When you are the one becoming the supervisor

If you want to be the counseling supervisor, start with the board that will have to accept your signature. Collecting a second certificate your board does not count spends the training money and still leaves the signature invalid.

In Texas, you apply to the council after five years with an unrestricted LPC in good standing, and you attach the 40-clock-hour certificate or the doctoral transcript. Before you take on an associate, the council’s page says you file the Supervisory Agreement Form, provide at least 4 hours of supervision each month, keep a record of each session, and send the supervised-experience form within 30 days after supervision ends, signed by both of you. An associate may have no more than two LPC supervisors on file at once.

For the ACS, you apply to CCE with the degree, the license or NCC, the disclosure statement, the 45 hours or the CACREP supervision course, the 100 hours of supervision you have already provided, and the five-year, 4,000-hour clinical threshold. CCE’s requirements page also says a completed doctoral internship can count toward that experience, at one year and 300 hours per school year, or the hours the internship course required. Read that line on the requirements page if you are counting internship time. Do not guess the conversion.

In Georgia, an LPC who will supervise directed experience entered into after September 30, 2018 needs the degree-based post-licensure years in Rule 135-5-.02 and either the ACS or the CPCS. Confirm the CPCS training total with LPCAGA. Do not borrow the ACS 45-hour figure and call it the CPCS rule.

The credential gets you the right to sign. The meeting still needs a record that stays out of the client chart. Use the clinical supervision notes template for that hour: anonymized case fields, risk and ethics prompts, guidance, actions, and signatures. It does not grant a credential, and it does not replace the board form that has to be filed before hours start.

Emosapien can draft the client note you review after the session. It does not decide whether your board will count a supervision hour, and it does not hold the supervisor credential. That judgment stays with you and the board. If you want the client-note side of the workflow, start at the clinician console or read the product features.
