If you are planning the perinatal mental health certification route, start by matching your professional identity to PSI’s track. Then collect the evidence PSI asks you to submit before you pay for an exam appointment. This guide summarizes PSI’s current public certification page, certification FAQ, and 2024 exam blueprint; verify the live requirements before you apply. Treat the perinatal mental health certification as a defined credentialing route, not as a synonym for a single training course.
PSI states these requirements on its certification page and expands the exam and renewal details in its certification FAQs. The fee is not a training price: PSI’s FAQ currently lists the certification exam at $500, while course providers set their own prices. Confirm the current course price with the provider before you enroll.
Choose the specialty track
PSI describes three tracks. Choose the one that matches the work you do and the credential or specialized training you will document.
| Track | Who PSI names | Education or credential evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Psychotherapy / Mental Health | Therapists such as licensed clinical social workers, psychotherapists, and psychologists | Graduate degree |
| Psychopharmacology | Prescribers, including advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and PharmD professionals | Medical degree or advanced practice nursing degree |
| Affiliated Professionals | Peer supporters, nurses, doulas, lactation professionals, support-group leaders, occupational or physical therapists, dietitians, community health workers, speech therapists, and others | Professional credential and/or specialized training |
PSI says the exam is the same across tracks, while the education, practice, and advanced-training evidence must fit the track you select. If your role could fit more than one category, ask PSI certification staff before you submit an application rather than assuming that a course title determines your track.
Confirm the practice requirement
PSI currently asks for two years of work experience in your profession with experience working with the perinatal population. For tracks that require a degree, PSI describes the two years as post-graduation experience. Your work does not have to occur in one setting, and it does not have to be exclusively perinatal work.
This is a certification eligibility rule, not a statement about your state scope of practice, independent practice authority, or payer credentialing. Keep those questions separate. Your license board, employer, payer contract, and professional rules may impose requirements that PSI does not decide.
The professional development plan for therapists helps you map your PMH-C track, training evidence, application steps, and renewal date.

This evidence map is an example of organization, not a promise that an application will be approved. PSI reviews the submitted evidence.
Complete the 20 hours of training
Foundation: at least 14 hours
Complete one approved perinatal mood and anxiety certificate course. PSI lists its 2-day Perinatal Mood Disorders: Components of Care Course, the Maternal Mental Health Webinar Certificate Course offered by PSI and the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, and approved alternate evidence-based courses as options. PSI says you need one qualifying foundational course, not every course on its list.
If you completed an equivalent course outside the United States, PSI asks you to contact certification@postpartum.net to determine whether it meets the Step 1 requirement. Do not assume that a similarly named workshop qualifies.
Advanced: at least 6 hours for your track
The advanced course must go beyond the PMH-C blueprint or provide advanced education for your specialty track. PSI says an alternate course must be presented live, last at least 6 hours, and include action-based learning such as case studies, simulations, role-play, or projects. Complete the foundational training before the advanced course.
For an alternate advanced course, keep the certificate, course agenda, and supporting materials. PSI says you can submit those materials with the application; it does not require pre-approval of the alternate course.
PSI-developed coursework and materials are optional. A purchase is not itself a certification requirement.
Prepare for the PMH-C exam
PSI’s current FAQ describes a three-hour exam with 125 multiple-choice or multiple-select questions. It includes statement-based questions and case-study scenarios. The blueprint explains that 100 questions are scored and 25 are unscored; the reported score is scaled from 0 to 1,000, with 700 required to pass.
The 2024 blueprint lists these major domains:
| Exam domain | Blueprint weight |
|---|---|
| Perinatal Mental Health Disorders | 14% |
| Perinatal Mental Health Risks, Protective Factors, and Interactions | 11% |
| Implications of Untreated Perinatal Mental Health Disorders | 8% |
| Screening and Assessment | 9% |
| Social Support Interventions | 8% |
| Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Approaches | 9% |
| Family Systems and Perinatal Mental Health | 7% |
| Psychopharmacology and Other Somatic Interventions | 7% |
| Equitable and Inclusive Patient-Centered Care | 8% |
| Perinatal Complications and Losses | 8% |
| Provider Wellness and Professionalism | 5% |
| Lactation & Feeding | 6% |
Use the blueprint to distribute your review time. PSI recommends reviewing the materials from your 14-hour certificate course and the blueprint. PSI also identifies its 2-day training manual as optional study material. Do not treat this guide as a substitute for either document, and do not study from leaked or shared exam content.
Submit the application evidence
PSI’s sequence is deliberate: finish the requirements, upload employment verification and training documentation, submit the application, wait for approval, and then register with Pearson VUE. PSI says the application review can take up to three weeks because employment and training records must be verified.
After PSI approves your application, Pearson VUE sends registration instructions and your PSI ID. PSI lists testing centers in the United States and internationally. Its FAQ says the exam is available in English, Spanish, and Canadian French, and accommodations should be requested before registration.
Know the retake and renewal rules
If you do not pass, PSI requires a three-month waiting period between attempts. Its FAQ says an approved candidate may retake the exam up to three times, paying the exam fee each time. Review your score report and the blueprint during the waiting period.
To keep the PMH-C current, PSI requires 12 continuing-education hours in perinatal mental health for your track every two years. PSI asks you to submit the CE documentation within the three months before your expiration date. PSI says there is no fee to keep the certification current, but a $75 extension fee may apply when you need an extension to submit renewal CE documentation.
Track your expiration date in the PSI portal. If you miss renewal, PSI says the credential moves to suspended status and cannot be used. A prolonged suspension can lead to expired status and additional reapplication steps. Check PSI’s current renewal instructions rather than relying on an old calendar reminder.
How PMH-C differs from other perinatal training
A perinatal mental health training can teach useful clinical knowledge without being the PMH-C credential. The certification route adds a defined eligibility review, track-specific training, an application, a standardized exam, and continuing-education maintenance.
The perinatal mental health screening guide focuses on screening workflow and follow-up, not certification eligibility. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale guide focuses on one instrument, not the PMH-C exam. If you are deciding how medication information fits a postpartum depression conversation, see Zoloft for postpartum depression and keep medication decisions with the qualified prescriber.

PSI’s certification materials describe the PMH-C eligibility and examination route. For questions about your license, state scope of practice, supervision, emergency protocols, or employer credentialing, check the rules and policies that apply to your role and jurisdiction.
Plan your next step
If the route fits your role, save the current PSI certification page, identify your track, and request your employment and training evidence before you apply. If you are comparing the perinatal mental health certification with another perinatal training, use the evidence map above and name the credential accurately. If the route does not fit your role, you can still pursue perinatal education without describing a course certificate as the PMH-C credential.
For questions about eligibility, alternate training, accommodations, or current fees, contact PSI at certification@postpartum.net. PSI’s requirements, exam arrangements, and fees can change. Confirm the live pages before you pay or submit.
