Copy those seven lines before you pay anyone. A 45-hour listing is not a ruling. The board page you just opened is.

Log the supervision course you actually take: one focus, one try, one reading, a monthly check-in, and a CPD/CEU column.

  • Five-line skeleton: focus theme, one try, one reading, monthly check-in, CPD/CEU log
  • Four monthly rows that ask whether you tried the move, not how you score
  • CPD/CEU log with date, title, provider, hours, and focus-tie column
  • Reminder that you set the goals; this is not a ranking or an owner file

Hours are not a national number

Clinical supervision training means the coursework your licensing board, or a credentialing body that board accepts, counts toward letting you supervise. It is not the meeting note. It is not the hour log. Those stay in the clinical supervision documentation binder.

Three published rules do not match each other. That’s the point of the blank line.

Texas. The Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council page on applying to be an LPC supervisor says applicants must meet Texas Administrative Code Chapter 681.72, including an unrestricted LPC license in good standing for a minimum of five years. The same page lists two documents to attach, email, or mail: a 40-clock-hour supervision course certificate, and a for-credit doctoral course in supervision of professional counseling or mental health services shown on an official transcript. It says there is no expiration date for the supervision course or the doctoral-level supervision course once completed, and that proof of completion must be submitted with the application. That page does not say one document replaces the other. Write both lines, then open Chapter 681.72 before you drop one.

California. The Board of Behavioral Sciences summary of supervisor qualifications (revised September 2024) says a new supervisor who is an LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, or LEP must complete a minimum of 15 hours of supervision training or coursework within 60 days of commencing supervision. The course comes from a government agency or an acceptable continuing education provider. Taken from a CE provider or a government agency, it cannot be older than two years before you start supervising. A master’s-or-higher course from an accredited school can be up to four years old. After that first course, the same summary requires six hours of continuing professional development in supervision during each renewal cycle. Psychologists licensed by the Board of Psychology, and psychiatrists, are exempt from the 15-hour course and the 6-hour CPD. A valid, active approved supervisor certification from AAMFT, the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work, CAMFT, or the Center for Credentialing and Education also exempts you from both.

CCE Approved Clinical Supervisor. The CCE required-training page says clinical supervision training must be specific to providing clinical supervision or becoming a clinical supervisor. You document either a three-semester-hour graduate course in clinical supervision from a CACREP-accredited program, or 45 clock hours that cover ten named content areas. Those areas are roles and functions of clinical supervisors, theoretical frameworks and models, supervisory relationship issues, methods and techniques, group supervision, evaluation and gatekeeping, use of technology, administrative procedures, legal and ethical issues, and culturally responsive supervision. Certificates have to show the 45 hours covered the areas. CCE may ask for a syllabus.

Hours, providers, and renewal rules in this table are from each board or credentialing body’s public page, read September 2026.

Fifteen hours in California is not 45 hours at CCE, and neither number is the Texas document list. None of them is your number until the board named on your checklist says so.

Counseling supervision training still has a profession line

Counselor supervision training is not one product. If you are an LPC in Texas, the application above is the page that lists the 40-clock-hour certificate and the doctoral course. If you are an LPCC in California, the BBS 15-hour rule is the one that names the course, unless an exemption on that PDF applies to you. If you want the national ACS, the CCE page is a third clock, and it does not erase the state one.

Which profession is on your first line? Write that before you compare courses.

The CCE requirements page adds gates the course does not cover. You need a master’s degree or higher in a mental health field from a CHEA-recognized accreditor. You need either a license that authorizes independent practice in a behavioral or mental health field, or the National Certified Counselor credential from NBCC, in good standing. You also document at least 100 hours of clinical supervision you have already provided, and five years of post-master’s mental health experience including at least 4,000 hours of direct service. The 45-hour course is the training line. It is not the whole application.

Marriage and family therapy uses a different stamp. The AAMFT Fundamentals of Supervision course is required for the Approved Supervisor designation. AAMFT offers it as a 30-hour course. The same page names supervision-mentoring requirements that are not the course. Count those hours from the handbook AAMFT links there, not from a course ad. The refresher course is required before the designation renews, and AAMFT offers it as a 6-hour course. Submit the Approved Supervisor Renewal Form with it, or the designation is not renewed. If your state board is the one that signs the supervisor application, read that board before you treat the AAMFT course as the only line.

That row illustrates the Texas application page. It is not a determination that you qualify. If your license is in another state, leave the Texas numbers off your checklist.

An approved provider is a name your board prints

Don’t pick a course because the sales page says supervision. Ask who is allowed to issue the certificate your board will open.

A listing that calls itself clinical supervision training still has to name the provider your board accepts.

For the ACS, CCE’s training page says Registered Credential Training Providers are the only providers CCE approves, after a vetting process. A graduate course has a different path: a three-semester-hour clinical supervision course from a CACREP-accredited program, with an official transcript. If you send continuing education instead, you send certificates for the 45 hours covering every required area. During review, CCE may ask for syllabi, learning objectives, and agendas.

For a new California BBS supervisor who is an LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, or LEP, the qualifications summary says the 15 hours come from a government agency or an acceptable CE provider. A master’s-or-higher course from an accredited or Bureau-approved school is the other age rule, not a free pass to skip the content list. That list includes competencies for new supervisors, goal setting and evaluation, the supervisory relationship, California law and ethics, cultural variables, contextual variables, supervision theories and literature, and documentation of the supervisee’s client files plus documentation of supervision. If your syllabus misses one of those, don’t assume the hours still count. The PDF says the content shall include those topics.

Texas is quieter on vendors. The application page names the documents, not a directory. It lists a 40-clock-hour certificate and a doctoral transcript. It does not say a workshop ad can stand in for either document.

Renewal is a second clock

The course that got you the credential is not always the course that keeps it. Which clock are you on?

CCE’s credential maintenance PDF, updated March 2022, says Approved Clinical Supervisors complete 20 clock hours of continuing education during each 5-year credential cycle, follow the ACS code of ethics, and pay an annual maintenance fee. Hours spent providing supervision do not count as that CE. One clock hour is one hour of participation, excluding breaks and lunch. Supervision of your own supervision can count for up to nine of the 20 hours, with documentation from your supervisor. If the credential is not recertified by the deadline, it expires.

AAMFT’s refresher course is required before an Approved Supervisor designation renews. AAMFT offers it as a 6-hour course. You also submit the Approved Supervisor Renewal Form. If you do not return that form, the designation is not renewed.

California’s six hours of supervision CPD sit on each license renewal cycle while you are supervising, not on a five-year national term. The summary lists more than a workshop: teaching a supervision course, published research on supervision, mentoring or consultation with another board-qualified supervisor (a signed log), or a supervisor peer discussion group (a letter from the facilitator). You keep those records. The PDF says you maintain them.

Texas’s application page says the supervision course has no expiration date once completed. That sentence is about the course you already finished, not about your LPC renewal CE. Don’t copy the Texas sentence onto a California or ACS row.

Write the next step while the tab is open

The last line on the checklist is the one people skip. Name the action and the date.

If you are applying, the next step is the form that board already published: the Texas online application with the certificate and the doctoral transcript, the California Supervisor Self-Assessment Report within 60 days of commencing supervision for the first time, or the CCE application with the transcript or certificates. The BBS summary says that self-assessment is a one-time submission. It also says a supervision agreement is completed within 60 days of starting with a new supervisee, and the supervisee keeps the signed form. That agreement is a record, not training. When the hour itself needs a meeting form, use the clinical supervision notes template.

If you are choosing a course, the next step is a syllabus check, not a cart. Print the content list from the page that governs you. Mark each area the syllabus actually covers. If a required area is missing, that course does not finish the line, even if the hour total looks right.

If you already hold a credential and the renewal date is inside this year, the next step is the refresher or the 20 hours, not another foundational course. Put the due date on the checklist. Then log the activity on a plan you own, the way you would log any other CE: date, title, provider, hours, and whether it still serves the focus you set. The professional development plan for therapists is that one-page file. It is not a board form, and it does not rank you.

The BBS PDF says revised September 2024. The CCE maintenance PDF says updated March 2022. AAMFT’s course pages name the 30-hour fundamentals course and the 6-hour refresher. Rules move. Re-open the page that governs your license before you pay, and again before you sign a supervisee.

Use the PDF to hold the course you chose: the focus for this cycle, one thing you will try in supervision, one reading tied to a content area your board named, a monthly line, and the CPD/CEU column for the certificate. Fill it after the checklist, not instead of it. The plan does not replace the clinical supervision training line you just wrote.
