The certified eating disorder specialist credential is a professional certification from the iaedp Foundation. It records verified eating-disorder clinical experience, professional qualifications, ethical practice, and continuing education. Keep your credential description aligned with the professional authorization and role you already hold.
Start with the credential that matches your profession
The current iaedp requirements page describes the certified eating disorder specialist route by professional authorization rather than by one universal degree list. You must hold a current license, certification, registration, or other legal authorization to practice in your discipline. Your final graduate transcript or diploma must support the eligibility for that professional authorization.
That means your first check is profession-specific: confirm that your license is current, confirm that the degree or diploma in your file corresponds to that license, and confirm that your scope of practice permits the work you plan to document. Review the current iaedp requirements and the rules of the authority that governs your professional authorization before you count experience toward the application.
CEDS is distinct from the related iaedp credentials for other disciplines. The current iaedp certification pages identify the CEDS as the specialist credential and the CEDS-C as the consultant credential for professionals who already hold an active CEDS. Do not describe yourself as CEDS-C while you are completing the CEDS route.
Build the experience record
The experience requirement is at least 2,500 hours of professional eating-disorder-specific experience over at least 24 months. The current CEDS page states that the experience occurs under the oversight of a CEDS-C. The current iaedp requirements page gives examples of indirect professional activities that may count, including supervision, case-based learning or teaching, community presentations, program development, teaching on eating-disorder topics, coursework and readings, blog entries or other writing, and journal clubs.
Do not assume that every hour in an eating-disorder setting qualifies. Keep a contemporaneous log that separates direct and indirect activities, dates, setting, client or program context, discipline, and the CEDS-C oversight attached to the work. Use the current iaedp requirements as your reference when you classify activities and prepare the verification record.
Use four readiness checks: quantity—the running total reaches 2,500 eligible hours; calendar—the experience spans at least 24 months; oversight—the qualifying work is documented under CEDS-C oversight; and verification—a qualified person can sign or otherwise verify the record.
- Quantity: your running total reaches 2,500 eligible hours.
- Calendar: the experience spans at least 24 months.
- Oversight: the qualifying work is documented under CEDS-C oversight.
- Verification: a qualified person can sign or otherwise verify the record.
Keep the record specific enough for the certification team to evaluate it rather than relying on a résumé line such as “eating-disorder experience.”
The professional development plan for therapists gives you one place to map your credential evidence, consultation, continuing education, and next review date.

Arrange CEDS-C consultation
You need 24 hours of consultation with an iaedp-Approved CEDS-C. The current iaedp requirements specify a minimum of 12 hours of individual or dyad consultation; the remaining 12 hours may be individual, dyad, or group consultation.
Before beginning, record the consultant’s name, approval status, discipline, consultation format, dates of meetings, hours, and major case or practice topics. Keep the consultation verification with your supporting records. For a separate board-facing supervision-hour workflow, see clinical supervision training.
Complete continuing education and Core Courses
The current route requires 20 hours of eating-disorder-specific continuing education earned within the previous two years. Retain certificates that show your name, training date, number of hours, and title. General professional development is not automatically eating-disorder-specific continuing education. For a clinician-facing assessment workflow, see eating disorder assessment; for the clinical technique boundary around eating-disorder work, see eating disorder therapy techniques before you count a training or describe your current scope.
You also need all four iaedp Core Courses through the iaedp Online Institute. The current iaedp requirements identify each Core Course as three hours of continuing education and say the courses can also apply to the continuing-education requirement. Track the course certificates separately from other CE so the application reviewer can see both the course completion and the total recent hours.
Pass the examination
The CEDS Certification Examination is a separate requirement. The current CEDS certification page says you must pass with a score of 80% or higher, and the current iaedp requirements page states that the exam score is valid for two years. Use the current certification portal and requirements page for the operative exam instructions, score rule, and validity window when you schedule or submit.
Do not treat the exam certificate as evidence of licensure or as a substitute for the experience and consultation requirements. It is one part of the application packet.
Gather the application packet
The current iaedp requirements page lists these application materials:
- Current professional license or credential verification
- Final graduate transcript or diploma supporting eligibility for licensure
- Current curriculum vitae
- Experience verification
- Consultation verification
- Three letters of recommendation
- Continuing-education documentation
- Core Course completion certificates
- CEDS Examination completion certificate
- Completed Standards of Conduct and Ethics disclosures
The checklist adds useful guardrails for the recommendation letters: the writers should be licensed or credentialed eating-disorder treatment professionals, at least one should be in your own discipline, and your iaedp-Approved CEDS-C consultant and personal therapist cannot write the letters. Confirm these details in the current application portal before requesting letters because application rules can change.
Fees and application timeline
The current checklist publishes a $195 CEDS initial application fee. Confirm any renewal fee and the route that applies to your circumstances with iaedp before you budget or schedule the next step. The 24-month experience requirement is a planning milestone for the traditional route.
After a complete application is submitted, the current CEDS page gives an estimated processing time of up to 120 days. It describes approximately 30 days for certification-team administrative verification followed by approximately 90 days for certification-committee review. An administrative approval of an individual section is not final certification approval.
| Stage | Published detail | What you should plan |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | 2,500 hours over at least 24 months | Keep a dated, verifiable log from the first qualifying activity |
| Application fee | $195 initial application fee | Confirm the amount in the portal before payment |
| Team review | About 30 days | Submit a complete, legible packet |
| Committee review | About 90 days | Do not schedule a credential-dependent commitment before final decision |
| Total processing | Up to 120 days after a complete application | Treat the estimate as a planning window, not a guarantee |
| - Renewal fee | Confirm the current amount and due date with iaedp | Check the current renewal instructions before budgeting |
What the CEDS lets you say
After iaedp grants the CEDS, you may accurately identify yourself as a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, subject to the credential’s current status and iaedp’s naming guidance. The credential communicates verified specialty preparation and experience in eating-disorder treatment.
The CEDS does not let you claim that you are licensed in a new profession, that you can practice outside your existing scope, or that iaedp has endorsed every clinical decision you make. It does not authorize independent medical care, prescribing, diagnosis outside your professional authority, or a particular level of care. Keep your credential statement next to your actual license and role when you describe services to clients, referral partners, payers, or employers.
It also does not make you a CEDS-C. The CEDS-C is a later consultant credential for professionals who already hold an active CEDS and meet its separate requirements. If a clinician asks you for the consultation hours required for their CEDS application, refer them to an iaedp-Approved CEDS-C unless you separately hold that consultant credential.
Application readiness check
Use this short check before opening the application in Certemy. It is a planning aid; iaedp’s current portal and requirements pages control.
When your evidence is ready, review the iaedp CEDS requirements page and the current CEDS certification page before submitting. Confirm the current portal instructions and any profession- or jurisdiction-specific requirements with the relevant authority.
